Domed cupola or bell tower on the top of the Royal Exchange. This is topped by a weather vane in the form of a golden grasshopper the emblem of Sir Thomas Gresham who built the original Exchange in 1565. The Royal Exchange was granted a Royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I. The present Royal Exchange was designed by William Tite and opened by Queen Victoria in 1844. Tradition has it that the grasshopper is from the original building and survived two catastrophic fires. City of London, UK. 28 December 2006.
