Massive sand dunes on the Atlantic coast of the Outer Hebrides are held in place by Marram Grass (Ammophila arenaria). This grass spreads by tough rhizomes which hold the bulk of the sand in place despite the Altantic winds. Where sand is eroded by the wind the blowing sand is trapped by other clumps of Marram grass. Harris, Isle of Lewis. Scotland UK. 08 October 2005.
